What is Cloud Computing?

If you ask enterprise IT experts they will tell you that cloud computing is a solution that helps companies increase productivity while reducing the cost of IT infrastructure. Other individuals will say that cloud computing offers you an alternative source for storing your data, photos, and important files in the event your PC crashes.  Another group of people will say that cloud computing provides you with a wide range of access to software and hardware applications which are available on a ‘pay as you go’ basis.

So, is There a Universal Definition or Answer for the Question – What is Cloud Computing?
If one were to define cloud computing in the universal sense of the word, it involves the use of the Internet which is commonly referred to as “the cloud” to run software and hardware applications and store important data for backup and disaster recovery.


Up until the inception of cloud computing the end user ran applications directly from a PC. In the case of a business or large company IT servers are setup and configured to handle all business needs.  Cloud computing has changed this configuration by moving the applications to a remote server which is still accessed by the company over the Internet but maintained by a remote cloud computing service provider.

How Google Platform as a Service Works

When you establish access to the cloud computing services provided by Google you can collaborate with multiple users anywhere in the world.  You even have access to important business data while you are traveling and if you relocate to another area of the world. First, let’s talk about some of the general ways Google creates versatility for a wide range of cloud computing services while addressing concerns about computing security issues.

Google Groups:  Google Groups on the Google cloud computing platform is geared toward businesses who wish to have a private cloud which requires user authentication to access the group.  This allows designated employees for a specific company to collaborate as well as create and manage their own groups.  This portion of the Google cloud computing platform is free and is designed to increase employee productivity through sharing of Google Apps for Business such as calendars, websites, documents, and other apps which can be archived for future reference.

Security-Specific Cloud Computing:  A number of clients who are using the Google cloud computing platform are government agencies which means that confidentiality is an absolute must.  Google offers apps for government organizations using the cloud computing platform that are security-specific to the purpose of the organization.  The apps help government agencies and organizations to ensure security of information and intelligence specific to the agency.

Multiple Versions of Google Chrome Web Browser:  Google offers its own web browser which interacts with the cloud server.  Google Chrome is suitable for individual users of the cloud computing platform that wish to collaborate with friends in the sharing of documents, photos, digital music, and other casual uses for cloud computing.  Google Chrome for Business is more geared toward businesses and companies that wish to collaborate in the cloud.  This version of Google Chrome also provides IT administrators with an interface to control the private cloud computing environment for companies that require authentication for access.

Chrome Operating System:  Chrome OS is Google’s own operating system that integrates with the cloud computing platform.  Devices that run on Chrome OS have a faster startup and response as well as immediate access to cloud computing applications from the desktop of the device.  The apps are readily available in Chrome OS with all collaborative data and information stored in the cloud for enhanced security.

Cloud Computing Microsoft – System Center 2012
System Center 2012 is an upgraded version of the previous System Center and allows businesses to create and manage their own private cloud.  This allows the companies to offer business apps over both a private cloud and a public cloud as a service by combining eight different products into a single solution.

There are two different versions of System Center 2012 which includes the Standard version which offers the basic office cloud and the Datacenter version which allows an infinite number of virtual machines under the Microsoft Datacenter version license.  This allows clients to create their own private cloud minus the costs associated with licensing.  This virtualization model mimics companies such as VMware that provide virtualization services to small, medium-sized, and large companies.

Virtual Machine Manager

Virtual Machine Manager is a primary component of Microsoft System Center 2012 since the service is being developed to the point that it can be considered a comprehensive virtual datacenter manager.  Virtual Machine Manager is capable of handling a lot of tasks that are typically delegated to an IT pro such as the capability to accomplish bare-metal installations on new hardware as well as initiate new Hyper-V applications which allow a guest virtual machine to tap into host services with the host handling the request close to the bare-metal which enhances performance.  In the past, Hyper-Vs could not be created and instead were simply managed and now it has been expanded to include Citrix XenServer which allows you to improve business continuity through datacenter automation processes.

In terms of virtual machines the applications that run on a VM have support integration for SQL data acquisition and other data packages.  You can also install more than one virtual machine and then configure them to operate as a single unit.  Virtual Machine Manager is also compatible with Windows Server Update to provide security patching over the network and within clusters which creates a convenient virtual centralized functionality.

The strongest aspect of Virtual Machine Manager is its capability to establish a private cloud with a self-service portal.  The cloud data infrastructure itself is extracted from the architecture of the user and at the same time allows users to install their own virtual machines, applications, and cloud services.  This means that Virtual Machine Manager maintains the characteristics which are apparent in a public cloud where the end user can create their own services with no contact with complex infrastructures.

Microsoft Dynamics

For companies that want to maintain customer retention Microsoft Dynamics CRM works with Microsoft cloud services and Office 365.  It is a web-based subscription service in the cloud that provides businesses with advanced services for improved customer relationship management.  When it is combined with Microsoft System Center and other Microsoft cloud products it creates a dynamic mix of servers and tools for taking care of all responsibilities associated with customer care and retention.

Office 365

Microsoft Office 365 takes the client-based office applications such as Microsoft Office, Exchange, and SharePoint produced by Microsoft and moves them to the cloud.  Office 365 consists of MS Office Professional Plus, Microsoft Exchange Online and Microsoft Lync and SharePoint Online.  It consists of the same client-based desktop applications Microsoft is known for except they are delivered in a collaborative environment via the Microsoft cloud.  Office 365 cuts the costs of email and collaboration in half when compared to operating these services over Exchange servers on the premises.

Windows Azure

Windows Azure works with Microsoft datacenters to enable users to create applications using multiple languages, a broad range of tools and different types of framework.  The application can be created and then managed across Microsoft datacenters and be integrated within your current IT infrastructure as well as any public cloud apps.

If your company requires applications with high availability you can create and manage these without having to worry about complex infrastructure.  The network load balance is built into Windows Azure with automated operating system patching for security.  You can also upgrade the application at any time without having to endure a lot of downtime.

Once your applications are created, Windows Azure also provides for scalability to allow you to make modifications according to the business requirements for your company.  It only takes a short time to scale applications and you can expand or diminish your resources as deemed necessary.  Microsoft makes Windows Azure available in its datacenters around the globe to make creating and managing business applications easy and convenient.
